Flower Description: This lily was the winning breakthrough into strongly upfacing Orientals lilies and rose to fame when discovered by florists in the mid 1970’s. Bred by the late Leslie Woodriff who we considered a close, personal friend, Leslie was a hybridizing genius. Now a ‘Hall of Fame’ lily, it is unfortunate that the “jobbers” have taken this name for use for just about anything that is dark pink to red. ‘Star Gazer’ has also become synonymous with the entire division of Oriental Lilies, no matter what the color or individual variety name. Walk into any florist shop and ask for ‘Star Gazer’ lilies and you will be shown every Oriental lily in the shop.
This is the original Woodriff ‘Star Gazer’ which produces reliably lots of sweetly-scented, deep rose-pink to crimson blooms with dark spots and a white edging on each petal. Normally reaches 3 feet but at times can hit 4. July flowering. Fragrant.
