Product Description



Flower Description: Smaller, recurved, deep red flowers with white edges. A nearly indestructible lily; reported to be bred from Lilium speciosum, Oriental, and Trumpet pollen, with the possible inclusion of L. henryi. 'Black Beauty' ranks high in the North American Lily Society's "Hall of Fame" for long-lived dependability in just about every area. Light scent. 5 to 6 Feet. July/August Flowering. Light Scent.

Editorial Note: We knew breeder Leslie Woodriff well and cherished our visits and time with him. In Holland, Leslie is considered almost as a national hero and is honored as the father of the modern Oriental Hybrid lily. In this country, most of the generation of breeders that followed Leslie looked down on him as being a crackpot or an old coot that knew nothing. What Leslie forgot in his lifetime is more than those people will ever learn in theirs.

Leslie was what most would call a “pollen dabbler”. As you walked through the field or his greenhouse, he would pull match boxes out of his pocket with his “special blends” of pollen and spread it as he went. Leslie did not keep paper records, this genius kept it all in his head.

Whenever we came upon ‘Black Beauty’ Leslie would always relate the same comment. During the 80’s and at the height of the Cold War, Leslie would always stop and say, “You know Bob, they say if there is a nuclear war, only cockroaches and rats will survive. MY Black Beauty will be there for them to look at”! And we think Leslie was right. This has been the single most indestructible, tolerant of all conditions lily we have ever grown.
