Lily Bulb Description

Flower Description. 'Red Morning' is an Orienpet lily in which there is no need for 'Sailors to take warning' but instead they should heave to and just sit and admire her outstanding beauty. Our first bulbs of 'Red Morning' actually came to us in error mixed with some planting stock of another variety. It took awhile to track it down, but now have sufficient stock to offer our garden customers.

We have been extremely pleased with the rich color of 'Red Morning' as it does not muddy as so many of the earlier hybrids did in this color group but rather takes on a bit of a lavender hue as the flowers age – see back left flower in above photo. Up to 4 feet now in the front yard, we do expect that this lily has the potential to hit 6 feet after another season, but to call it a skyscraper, we would say no. Topping out here at about a dozen blooms, 'Red Morning' does carry a light Orienpet type fragrance and for us blooms in Mid-July Flowering.

Editorial Note: In researching what the jobber companies had to say about this lily, it made us want to sit down and cry. One described 'Red Morning' as having “massive, upward-facing flowers” that are “bronze” in color, another as being “Large trumpet-shaped” again being “bronze” in color while another referred to them as being akin to skyscrapers, which we guess means they are taller than trees, while another touted “25 to 30” blooms per stem. Here in our gardens, we have seen none of these, but then being growers rather than jobbers, we write from first hand experience, and there the difference is to be found.
