Lily Bulb Description

The meaning of the name 'Samson' is “Like the Sun” and this Johan Mak selection is exactly that. Johan reported this 'Auratum' type hybrid showed up in a bed of seedlings some years ago. Impressed with it, he selected it out, and as all the great breeders do, hoped for the best knowing that now, time would be the final judge.

As the years passed, 'Samson' just got better and better, putting to shame memories of the magnificent 'Imperial Gold' strain of years past. Even if planted then, within the best of the best of the old De Graaff Oregon Bulb Farm strain, 'Samson' would have stood out “like the sun” towering over them all. Most certainly the surrounding Auratum types would have dropped their petals in shame seeing how they paled being overshadowed by the strength and beauty of 'Samson'.

Johan reported this photo was taken on a day when the thermometer had just hit 100 F. Following continued full sun exposure throughout the week, 'Samson' stood boldly, in defiance of the heat, holding his color well and refusing to sunburn as so many white lilies do under such conditions.

As with all of Johan's introductions and offerings, 'Samson' is in very limited supply and expected to sell out this season. 'Samson', in his 3rd year in this spot was standing at 52 inches. Johan measured the flower face at 10 inches and remarked “though this is an Oriental seedling, it smells like L. auratum". This is an L. auratum hybrid and should be treated as L. auratum in the garden. Late July Flowering. Fragrant.
