Lily Bulb Description

Classification: Oriental Hybrid (USDA Zones 5-9, colder climates w/winter mulch.)

Lily Bulb #L-9121 - (LeVern Friemann, Bellingham, Washington) Named for the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which separates Washington from Canada, this strong-growing Tetraploid Oriental lily has rose-violet blooms with pronounced white margins, a small amount of papillae, indistinct spots, and light pink reverse. A creamy yellow star surrounds the nectary. Light fragrance. 4 Feet. July/August.

A sister seedling to LeVern's famous 'Scheherazade', (original selection #LF-13) this is one of four selections we made from his 'Tetraploid Black Beauty' x 'Tetraploid Rachael Pappo' crosses some 20 years ago. Though not as well known as 'Scheherazade' which contains the most yellow in the petal reverse, 'Juan de Fuca' has always held an honored placed in our home garden.

Also being offered this spring, 'Scheherazade' has recently had a number of erroneous statements made concerning flower size and bloom. Promoted as having flowers "10 inches wide", in one garden magazine, we have never seen this. In light shade, up to 7.5 inches, full sun, they are about 6.5 to 6.75 inches. On 8/5/09, when all of the Friemann 'Black Beauty' Hybrids were in flower around our home, we took exact measurements because of the wild claims of some companies importing from Holland. Several exceptional "Best in Show" stems of 'Scheherazade' were sporting flowers measuring 6 7/8 inches. Also promoted as "sometimes blooming twice in the same season" makes us wonder just how gullible some catalog companies think people are.

We list this information only as a FYI for those who care (most gardeners don't), but B & D Lilies is the oldest lily specialty nursery in America, we knew and worked with the lily breeding pioneers, and we would like to see the accurate reporting of history and breeding information, not someone’s revision in order to market bulbs they simply purchase for resale.

Bulb Size - Our standard for bulbs of this lily cultivar ranges from Premium-size» (16/18 cm) to Exhibition-size» (over 20 cm). Click here for details.
